Why Destructive Love Patterns Repeat
Affliction, attachment, and relationship karma in Vedic astrology
This month I’m writing about love from a Vedic astrology perspective. However, I’m doing so in the shadow of an Rāhu-led eclipse that brings intensity rather than a sense of harmony and ease.
Rāhu amplifies and accelerates desire, pushing it beyond ordinary limits. It breaks boundaries, distorts judgment, and creates urgency without clarity. For this reason, Rāhu is associated with obsession and addiction: appetite without restraint. When Rāhu causes an eclipse, these qualities are not subtle. They disrupt order and demand attention.
Venus was tightly conjoined Rāhu during the eclipse, placing Venusian significations under Rāhu’s influence. Romantic relationships, sexuality, and pleasure therefore become vulnerable to excess, confusion, and imbalance.
If you have a Rāhu–Venus combination in your birth chart, or are running a daśā that activates these planets, this eclipse may have made such tendencies more visible. Either way, the “love in the air” right now speaks less to romance and more to examining destructive or imbalanced relationship patterns. The upcoming Ketu lunar eclipse on March 3 will also highlight relationships and offers an opportunity for release, but more on that later.
For now, let’s look at destructive relationship patterns in Vedic astrology and how to identify them in a chart.
The qualities of Venus
When assessing relationship problems, Venus is the first planet to examine. She is the primary kāraka for romance, sexuality, and pleasure. Venus shows what and whom you find attractive, and how you move toward union. When she is strong and supported, relationships tend to develop with steadiness and reciprocity.
When Venus is afflicted, the issue is not necessarily the absence of love, but rather the way desire operates.
Venus with malefic planets
One type of affliction is Venus under the influence of malefic planets. This can include conjunction, aspects, or (to a lesser extent) when she is in a sign ruled by these planets.
When Venus is influenced by Rāhu, attraction becomes intensified and less restrained. The person may pursue relationships outside social norms. If Venus is strong, this can show sexual magnetism and unconventional partnership. If weak and further afflicted, it can manifest as repeated infidelity, compulsive sexuality, or relationships that damage stability, finances, or reputation.
When influenced by Mars, desire becomes forceful and immediate. Attraction may form quickly and physically, which can give strong chemistry. If strained, it can brings jealousy, impatience, issues with control, and open conflict or aggression.
When influenced by Saturn, Venus becomes restrained. There may be delay in partnership, caution in intimacy, or difficulty expressing affection. When she is strong, this gives loyalty and endurance. If weak, it can show emotional distance, remaining in unsatisfying relationships out of obligation.
House placement
House placement must be judged through lordship and strength, but certain houses automatically place Venus under more pressure than others. The 6th house is her Mārana Kāraka Sthāna. This can make relationship tied to conflict, criticism, or imbalance. In the 8th, instability, secrecy, or sudden breaks may shape partnership. In the 12th, desire may lead to hidden involvement, loss through relationship, or withdrawal within marriage.
Debilitation and combustion
When Venus is debilitated in Virgo, it can weaken judgment in choosing partners and lead to repeated dissatisfaction. I’ve always considered this to be the “Goldilocks” placement, where Mercury’s (ruler of Virgo) discernment and critical nature turn to matters of the heart. Each aspect of a potential partner is weighed and assessed with the head rather than the heart.
Combustion occurs when Venus is too close to the Sun and becomes invisible in the sky. In this state, Venus outer significations — relationship, pleasure, harmony — are not easily expressed. The person may struggle to access intimacy in a visible or mutual way, even if they have internal desire for such things.
Last thoughts
As is always the case, you need to consider various factors. For example, a conjunction or aspect from one malefic can bring in stress and difficulties, but they are often still manageable. If Venus has two or more connections with malefic planets, this becomes a “curse” combination, which is much more difficult and likely to cause suffering.
Venus in the 6th is difficult, but an aspect from Jupiter can help, as can a strong sign placement, such as Pisces, her sign of exaltation.
Last but certainly not least, you always need to compare her state in the main birth chart with the D9/Navāṁśa. If Venus gains strength in the D9, relationship difficulties can stabilize with maturity. If she remains weak in both charts, similar problems are more likely to repeat. In either case, Vedic remedies can help.
