27 Moons Project: Bharaṇī Nakshatra
...the key to understanding your mind and the mind of others
In Vedic astrology, the moon is divided into 27 divisions called Nakshatra. The moon is our mind and therefore how we filter all thoughts, impressions and experiences. Knowing our Moon Nakshatra and the Nakshatras of others is key to understanding and appreciating how we think and approach the world. If you don’t know your Nakshatra, you can find out what it is here.
Happy belated Moon Monday!
I started this post yesterday, but didn’t quite manage to finish it on time. Although the moon has since moved on to Kṛittikā Nakshatra, I’m still posting this one now – lest Bharaṇī punish me (more on that later)!
Ok, let’s get started.
This Monday’s Nakshatra: Bharaṇī
Bharaṇī Nakshatra is the second Nakshatra in the Vedic lunar zodiac, spanning from 13°20' to 26°40' in Aries. It is governed by Venus.
The term Bharaṇī translates to “the bearer” or “the one who carries.” It is pronounced “Bha-ra-nee.”
Bharaṇī is marked by three stars, 35 Arietis, 39 Arietis, and 41 Arietis, representing the energetic and potent qualities of this Nakshatra.
To understand the psyche of individuals with their moon in Bharaṇī Nakshatra, let's take a look at its symbols, deity, and overarching themes.
Symbols
The symbol for Bharaṇī Nakshatra is the yoni, or female sex organ. Symbolically, the yoni can be seen as standing for birth and creation, both literally and figuratively.
However, Bharaṇī is not about the beauty of birth and the joy of new life. This Nakshatra symbolizes the pain a mother has to bear to bring a child into this world, and endurance and restraint required by such an act.
But the yoni and birth process is also deeply about transformation: by enduring pain, the one becomes two, the old creates the new. This powerful sense of transformation and stamina is also deeply linked to Bharaṇī.
Ruling Deity
When it comes to Nakshatras, knowing the ruling deity gets you closer to understanding their inner nature than the sign they are in.
Bharaṇī Nakshatra is ruled by Yama, the god of death and dharma (righteousness). Yama’s tasks include acting as the judge of the dead and the enforcer of moral order. He is revered for his just and impartial nature, which ensure souls are judged fairly based on their karma.
Yama embodies the principles of discipline, justice and transformation. He is often depicted riding a buffalo, while holding a noose and a mace, which symbolizes his authority over life and death.
The influence of Yama bestows qualities of resilience, ethical conduct and an understanding of life's cyclical nature on those born under Bharaṇī Nakshatra.
Individuals with their moon in Bharaṇī often exhibit a strong sense of duty, a profound respect for natural laws and an ability to face challenges head-on. They are known for their transformative energy and their ability to navigate life's ups and downs with grace.
Yama's association with Bharaṇī Nakshatra encourages individuals to live a righteous life, embrace change and pursue spiritual growth. This nakshatra symbolizes the balance between creation and destruction, reminding us of the importance of ethical living and the inevitability of transformation.
Just as Yama oversees the moral order of the universe, natives of Bharaṇī Nakshatra often display a deep sense of justice and a commitment to upholding ethical principles. That said, they can sometimes come at this task with a harshness and a sense of “punishment” for those who do not follow what they deem righteous.
Skills and Interests
With their capacity for intense self-control, Bharaṇī Nakshatra can excel in physical disciplines like yoga. However, don’t think soft light and a gentle downward dog. These native prefer a practice that is intense and requires focus and discipline.
Bharaṇī Nakshatra also excel at professions that involve death, dying or transformative experiences. They do not shy aware from the harsher sides of life or (literally) getting blood on their hands, for example, by working as a butcher.
Although these natives are followers–and enforcers–of the rule of law, that does not mean they follow traditions blindly. In fact, they are often revolutionary types that do not shy away from breaking down habits and customs that no longer serve a role. Instead, they transform (“birth”) them into something new.
Strong-willed and opinionated, Bharaṇī Nakshatra natives do not shy away from an fight. They are drawn to knowledge and like to dig deeply into the subject they find interesting. They have a tendency to lord over others in a way that leads to challenges and opposition.
These people are not the type who feel the need for niceties, and you’re not likely to find them beating around the bush. Because of their blunt, outspoken nature, they may not always be well-liked by others.
However, this is really just these natives speaking their minds. They is a purity to their honesty, which can be a refreshing level of transparency compared to those who manipulate with pretty words or always keep you guessing what it is they mean to say.
